Caption from negative sleeve: Body of dead sharpshooter, Battle of Gettysburg. Each of these glass negatives is a "copy" of one half of an original stereograph glass negative. (See neg. LC-B815-251.) The copy negative numbers are: LC-B811-251A, LC-B811-251B, and LC-B811-251C. The number "942" is on variant A; "251" is on variant B; and "942" is on variant C. William Frassanito in "Gettysburg: A Journey in Time" credits Timothy O'Sullivan as the photographer of this image. "Although Gardner claimed credit for this view in his "Sketch Book," the original catalogue issued only two months following the battle identified the cameraman as O'Sullivan." Clipping from Confederate veterans, v. 33 (glued to back of mount for print in LOT 4168) identifies soldier as Andrew Johnston Hoge Forms part of Civil War glass negative collection (Library of Congress).
